Monarch of Spain. Known as Felipe el Piadoso, he inherited a kingdom in constant decline after the disastrous war against Elizabethan England led by his father Philip II. Basically he governed the nation by concentrating the powers of the state on himself. Like his predecessor, he was a very religious man with little propensity for foreign policy. His main intention was the maintenance of Spanish possessions and support for the powers of the Catholic Church which he controlled through the Holy Inquisition. Because of his rigor Felipe III neglected state finances and reforms, leading Spain to the brink of economic distress. A further attempt to counter England through the invasion of Ireland together with the independence of the Netherlands (1609) ended with the defeat of Kinsale (1602) and the Treaty of London (1604).
