Monarch of Spain. A direct descendant of the Habsburg dynasty, he ascended the throne after the death of his father King Philip III (1621) inheriting the titles of Kings of Spain and Portugal, of Naples, Sicily and Sardinia. Man with an excellent cultural level and patron of the arts, he had no particular propensity for politics. However, Philip IV reigned during the difficult time of the Thirty Years War during which Spain was involved in the conflict against Holland (1624), against Protestant Sweden in the battle of Nordlingen in Bavaria, and against France (1635) which apparently ended with the peace of Westphalia (1648) and definitively with the peace of the Pyrenees (1659).
