Genevieve Marie Phillips, age 87, Stevens Point, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at her home. She was born April 7, 1919, in Stevens Point, daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Kontny) Ostrowski. On June 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to Cleland Phillips in Pensacola, Fla. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1956.
Genevieve attended St. Peter Grade School in Stevens Point and graduated from Emerson High School in 1937. She proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy Waves working on airplanes during World War II. She entered on Jan. 17, 1944, in Milwaukee and was honorably discharged as a seaman 1st class on Oct. 12, 1945, in Pensacola, Fla.
An excellent seamstress, Genevieve graduated from fashion design school in Milwaukee and spent three years making custom wedding and bridal party gowns in Stevens Point. She also enjoyed working as a seamstress for 19 years at the former Schmidt's Dress Shop in Wausau until 1977.
Genevieve served her community as a volunteer at the Lincoln Center and was a member of the St. Peter Rosary Society – Rose 10 for more than 55 years, as well as a member of American Legion Post 6 Auxiliary and Women of the Moose.
Her family is grateful that she enjoyed a healthy, active and independent life, but will miss her dearly. Deeply devoted to her faith and her family, she showed her selflessness as a caregiver for her sister and love and care of her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, David Phillips of Newark, Calif. and daughter, Lois (Ron) Newcomb of Wausau; sisters-in-law, Varmel Phillips of Live Oak, Fla. and Loretta Ostrowski of Stevens Point. Genevieve has six grandchildren, Lael Phillips of Peoria, Ill., Gail (Dan) Jackson, Matt (Michelle) Urmanski, Kent (Heather) Urmanski all of Wausau, Bob (Jenny) Urmanski of DePere and Kelly Newcomb of Weston. Also, five great-grandchildren, Brooke, Samantha, Gabrielle, Hannah and Brayden.
In addition to her husband and parents, Genevieve was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Ostrowski, and sister, Alice Ostrowski.
