Born in Boston, Dr. Gudas graduated from Needham High School, Tufts University, and Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at the United States Public Health Service Hospitals in Baltimore, MD., Anchorage, AL., and Brighton, MA., where he served as a Captain and Medical Director of Ophthalmology. He was board certified in Ophthalmology. He was a staff physician at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and the Boston Medical Center (formerly University hospital). He held an appointment as a Clinical Instructor in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He served for many years as Director of Ophthalmology at the Carpenters', Laborers' and Teachers' Union Vision Centers in Boston. He was in private practice in Brookline and Rockland from 1974 until his retirement in 2008.
Dr. Gudas was a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the New England Ophthalmological Society and the Massachusetts Medical Society.
He leaves his wife, Dr. Valerie Molinaro; his sons, Mr. Erik Gudas and Dr. Christopher Gudas; three grandchildren, Kayleigh, Nathan and Jaime; his sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Lowry and Dr. Linda Sayler Gudas and their husbands; and many nieces and nephews.
His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday August 30, 2009 at the Needham Congregational Church, 1154 Great Plain Avenue, Needham, MA. 02492.
A private burial service will be held at the National Veteran's Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
