Jane's father Alfred Ingraham in the 1840's built Ashwood Plantation in Port Gibson, MS. Jane was evacuated to Vicksburg with her sisters when General Grant in April 1863 crossed the Mississippi River and it was anticipated the plantation would be in danger. On May 3rd, 1863 the army arrived at Ashwood and a fierce battle was fought on the front lawn. Generals McPherson and McClernand made Ashwood their headquarters. When the union army left 10 days later the family was left with almost nothing as everything had been either stolen or destroyed.

Jane married Dr. Alfred Rowan in Claiborne County, MS on Oct 6, 1864 after his first wife, Julia, died in 1863. She married Alonzo Brunson abt 1873.
