Songwriter. Born in New York City, he began his career writing songs for Broadway musicals in the 1920s. He became a performer on the NBC radio show "Sweethearts of the Air", which broadcast for over 15 years. As a composer his catalog boasts some of the highest charting songs of the 1930's and 1940's including, "Muddy Water", "I Just Roll Along", "Wagon Wheels", "Somebody Loves You", "Deep Purple", "I Hear America Singing", "Evening Star" and "As Years Go By". He died in New York City and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
