Businessman. He was America's foremost clothes designer during his time. He was the son of Jewish immigrants who settled in Vermillionville, Louisiana. His father was from Austria and his mother was from Prussia. His father died in 1874 and his mother became a successful businesswoman, running a furniture store, a dry goods store and a pharmacy. 1878 she married Benjamin Falk and they became the most successful merchants in town. After a fire burned down the shop which Henri had established, he and his wife, Blanche Lehman moved to New York City to start a new business, a women's clothing shop catering to the wealthy and fashionable. In 1913 he was able to build an 8-story building on 57th Street for his expanded store. After Henri's wife died in childbirth in 1895, Abraham Beekman became his spouse for the next 30 years and was the principal benefactor of his estate upon his death. They are buried together in Kensico Cemetery. The plantation Bendel built on the Vermillion River has been sold and divided into a subdivision called Bendel Gardens.
