Enlisted as a Private on 15 February 1862 at the age of 27 in Company I, 61st Infantry Regiment Ohio. Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant on 25 May 1862. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 9 Oct 1862. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 29 Apr 1864. Mustered Out Company I, 61st Infantry Regiment Ohio on 31 March 1865
