Short Biography for Elmer Sylvanus Firestone
· 2013-08-05

Elmer Firestone married Mary E. Costello on January 2, 1888 in Detroit, MI. Daughter "Kate" was born on February 5, 1891 in Nebraska. Elmer, wife Mary and Kate moved to Des Moines, IA in 1892. In 1894, they had a son named Nicholas. Using business directories the family had moved to St. Louis, MO. They were there less than a year. The family moved to Chicago, IL. In 1895, Abraham Lincoln Firestone was born. In 1896 they stayed in Chicago, IL and had another son named Clinton DeWitt. In 1897, they were still in Chicago and had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth.
In 1900, Elmer, Kate, Lincoln and Clinton returned to the Firestone Farm in Columbiana County, OH. Also, in 1900 Elmer's wife Mary took the other two children, Nicholas and Mary back to Ann Arbor, MI. They lived with Mary's mother. It appears the family spilt in half. A newspaper article contains the obituary for Mary Costello. She had been living in NY. She authored one book (there may be more). She may have left to pursue her writing career. She died in 1909. In 1910 Elmer married Lydia Delia Alban. In 1911 Kate married Merlin Eldrid Ake. In 1914 Lincoln was living with Elmer's mother at the Firestone Farm. He committed suicide by a gunshot to his stomach. Harvey Firestone signed his death certificate. In 1930, Nicholas died. He was living in Akron, OH and working for his uncle Harvey Firestone at Firestone Tire. Clinton was also a resident in Akron, OH until his death in 1971. Mary moved to Florida sometime before 1920. In 1980, Kate died, she had been living in Akron, OH.

In addition to linked children he had Catherine A born Feb 1891 in Nebraska. She was living in Columbiana Ohio per 1900 census with her father and several siblings - however wife Mary still alive in Michigan where she died in 1908 at home. She had TB. Not all making logic but will continue to study. She died as Mary Firestone. Her stone only reads "Daughter" Only child not located is Mary Elizabeth born 1897, who is likley with her mother in 1900. Not sure why Elmer and Mary seperated. Her illness? This agrees with what other researchers have found. Since Mary Costello Firestone died in 1910, she may not be on 1910 census. Where did young child go, Mary Elizabeth Firestone and who raised her.
