Stone Carver, Architect. He was the designer of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston, Massachusetts, among other prominent buildings, and is sometimes called "the Father of the Granite Industry" for his innovations in the selection, quarrying, and shipping of granite. In 1826, he developed the first commercial railway in the United States, the "Granite Railway", to move stone from quarries in Quincy, Massachusetts. He maintained a studio in Boston, where he taught classes in stone carving and architecture, with sculptor Horatio Greenough and architect Isaiah Rogers among his pupils. He also designed the layout of Hall Cemetery in Quincy, where he would eventually lie.

Gravesite Details

Grave is by the front gate, with both a granite marker and a small granite obelisk. An additional memorial, a thirty ton granite column, is in the center of the cemetery.
