James Conrad (J. C.) Powell, Jr., age 85, passed away August 7, 2009. Born in Dallas, to James C. Powell, Sr. and Eulah Dawson Powell, he spent most of his life in Texas and graduated from Lubbock High School. Following service in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he returned to Lubbock to complete his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Texas Tech University. J.C. worked in the banking industry for 21 years in both Texas and New Mexico. After retiring, he was employed by the FDIC.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Helen Gillham Powell.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Jerry Misurek of Cumming, Ga., with whom he lived for the last seven years; son and daughter-in-law, James C., III and Terri Powell of Tomball; sister and brother-in-law, Mona and Jim Sandlin of Odessa; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a niece, four nephews, and several cousins.

J.C. was active in the Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America, and various community groups throughout his life. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, he will be missed by many.

Burial will be in the Terry County Memorial Cemetery in Brownfield at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Bowman Chapel at the First United Methodist Church of Lubbock.
