Sketches of Students of First Decade
Rev. Schuyler Seager, D.D., was a native of Simsbury, Connecticut, where he was born July 15, 1807. He was a student in the Seminary from 1828 to 1831; graduated at Wesleyan University in 1836; taught moral and mental philosophy and belles-lettres in Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima; Principal of the same, 1837-1844. He then entered the pastoral work in Genesee Conference until 1854. He was again Principal of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary one year, 1856-1857; Principal of Genesee Model School, Lima, New York; 1856, D.D., Wesleyan University; 1858-1860, Principal Dansville Seminary. He again went back to pastoral work. He was Delegate to General Conference 1844-1848. He was twice married and died leaving six children. Dr. Seager was generous and true--a warm friend, a devoted Christian, an excellent educator, and a successful preacher and pastor. While a student at Cazenovia he, in connection with a brother student by the name of Cole, was the instrument of an extensive revival of religion in Pompey Hollow. He was no time-server nor policy worker, but only sought to meet his responsibilities and improve his ministry, which he had "received of the Lord Jesus to testify the gospel of the grace of God." His end was peace.
