Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Pennsylvania in 1827, Graham came to Iowa City early in life to practice the trade of a millwright. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was chosen first lieutenant of Company B of the First Iowa Infantry. At the Battle of Wilson's Creek, while commanding his company, he was wounded in the left arm. On August 2, 1862 he was appointed a major in the 22nd Iowa Infantry. On September 17, 1862, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. On May 22, 1863, he was taken prisoner at Vicksburg. Returning to his regiment on May 6, 1864, he became its commanding colonel. He served with distinction in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. He was mustered out with his regiment on July 25, 1865. On that day he was brevetted brigadier general "for faithful and meritorious services."
