Actress. After critics praised her acting as the lead in "The Shanghai Gesture" on Broadway, she went to Hollywood, where her credits included F.W. Murnau's "4 Devils" (1928) and "City Girl" (1930), "State's Attorney" (1932) with John Barrymore, and "Morning Glory" (1933) with Katharine Hepburn. While making "Five and Ten" she became friends with the film's lead, Marion Davies, who introduced her to Stephen "Laddie" Sanford, an international polo star. She and Sanford married in 1933, after which she retired from films and moved with him to Palm Beach, Florida, where she reigned as the grande dame of Palm Beach society. She was close friends with Rose Kennedy, a neighbor, and entertained the King and Queen of Jordan and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor at her mansion. She also took part in charity and philanthropic works.
