Written by Freddy Brown, author of the book, "Dance Steps, Six Generations of Descendants of Dance Brown from Virginia to Tennessee". Freddy Brown is the third great grandson of Dance Brown.

This Brown family migrated out of Virginia into Tennessee by the following path:
County, State (earliest date - latest date)
* Bedford County, Virginia (mid 1770s - 1799)
* Montgomery County, Virginia (1799 - 1804)
* Russell County, Virginia (1804 - 1807/8)
* Sumner County, Tennessee (1807 - 1897)

Dance Brown was born around 1774-1776 in Virginia and died on 26 March, 1860 in Westmoreland, Sumner County, Tennessee. He is buried in the Williams Cemetery (also known as the Dance Brown Cemetery). DANCE was a poplar surname in the mid 1700s in the Virginia counties of Chesterfield and Henrico, which is where I suspect to probably find this Brown family's roots prior to Bedford County.

Dance was the son of Edith Brown who first appears in Bedford County, Virginia. His father is unknown at this time. His known siblings living with Edith Brown are:
1. George Thomas Brown (1768-1815) married Elizabeth Best
2. Sarah (1787-1872) married Hardy Caldwell
3. Rahab (1789-1850) married James Caldwell

Dance first married Keziah GRANT (daughter of John GRANT and Violetta Chambers) on 2 Nov 1799 in Fincastle, Montgomery County, Virginia. Violetta Chambers was the daughter of William Chambers, Sr. and Ann Booth. William and Ann both died in Montgomery County, Maryland. William Chambers was the son of Robert Chambers. Ann Booth was the daughter of Robert Boyd Booth and Sarah Filmore of Southampton, Virginia.

Dance's wife, Keziah, was born in 1780 in Maryland and died on 12 Sep, 1845 in Westmoreland, Sumner County. She is buried in the Williams / Dance Brown Cemetery in Sumner County beside her husband, Dance.

John Grant, was not only Dance's father-in-law, but also his step-father since he married Edith Brown in Bedford County, Virginia in 1792, 7 years prior to Dance married his daughter, Keziah. Edith's assumed first husband ( _____ Brown) must have died after Nov 15, 1788 and before June 16, 1789. Since Rahab was b. Aug 15, 1789 (minus 9 months = Nov 15, 1788) and since Edith was in June 16, 1789 census alone.

Dance married (2) Sarah HATCHETT daughter of Elisha HATCHETT Sr. and Nancy Jane TAYLOR on 1 Jan 1846 in Sumner Co, Tennessee. Sarah was born about 1798 in Virginia.

==============Chronology and census info ====================

1776-approx. birthdate Tn census says birthplace in Virginia.

BEDFORD COUNTY

1797, Sep 24 - George Thomas Brown still in Bedford County, as he witnessed a deed for William Kanady to John MaCoy along with Archelaus Gilliam, John Nichols, Jr. and Patrick Lynch. Then on Feb 27, 1797 the lease was proved by the oath of Archelaus Gilliam, John Nichols, Jr., and Patrick Lynch witnesses whose names are thereunto subscribed. George Thomas Brown's name was not mentioned in February, so I suspect he and probably the rest of the Brown clan had gone to Montgomery County by then.

1799 - May 9, paid his personal property taxes for that year. There was 1 male over 16, and he had 1 horse worth 12 cents.

1799 - August 30 - Bedford County Va, Dance Brown an infant aged under 21 by John Grant his next friend,

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
1799-Nov 2, married in Montgomery Co., Va. to Keziah Grant. George Thomas Brown and Dance Brown listed on the license.

1800 - No document tying Dance Brown to Montgomery County in 1800.

1801 - June 3, Dance Brown paid his personal property taxes for that year, 1 male over 16.

1802 - May 8 Dance Brown paid his personal property taxes for that year in Montgomery County, Va.

1803 - May 2, a Daniel Brown paid his personal property taxes for that year, (This appears to be Dance Brown as well)

1803 - May 3, a Daniel and wife Lydia bought 218 acres on Crab Creek from Thomas and Nancy Bratton, corner of David Dennisen - originally owned by James Byrn (395 acres into 2 tracts) located on the "Great Road" and known as the Blue Spring tract of Crab Creek. The Blue Spring tract came in the hands of John Langdon, who in 1793 had moved to Wilkes Co., Ga. And at that date made a transfer to Northrup Fuller [by the way, George Thos. Brown's daughter, Dorcas, married James Fuller]. In 1791, Northrup Fuller received a license from Montgomery Co., giving him permission to operate an "ordinary" at his house called Stony Batter. This was one mile west of Christainsburg on the Great Road. In 1802 and 1803 Northrup Fuller and his wife, Mary (Winters), divided the 395 ac. On the Blue Spring tract and Thomas Bratton (and wife Anne Nancy Chrisman) and David Dennison each acquired portions (Montgomery Deed Bk C pp 583, 672). Thomas Bratton's share of 218 acres was sold to William Pepper and Robert Brabson in 1804. - from Kegley's books vol 1 pg 204.

1804, March 6 Daniel and Lydia his wife of Montgomery Co. sold the 218 acres to William Peppers and Robert Brabson. Vol. D. pp 75,76.

RUSSELL COUNTY

1804 - Dance Brown is on the personal property tax rolls in Russell County, Va. - 1 tithable and 0 horses.

1804 - Feb 3, Montgomery County, Va. - Danel Brown witnessed with John Grant and James Caldwell, land sold by Ralph and Elizabeth Bogel of Wythe Co., Va. to Edward Morgan - 80 acres. Here Danel appears to be Dance Brown with his father-in-law, John Grant and his brother-in-law, James Caldwell who married Rahab Brown, Danel or Daniel may be another brother

1805 - no document tying him to Montgomery Co. in this year, we must assume that he no longer lives in Montgomery County. In fact he should be in Russell County by then. Since there were no more Daniel Browns before or after Dance was there 1799-1804, and since both names are not on the tax lists for the same year (simultaneously), it seems to me that Daniel and Dance Brown are the same person in Montgomery County, Va.
1804-Feb 28, Dance and Keziah bought 40 acres on Copper Ridge in Russell County, Virginia from Jessie B. Belsher and Elizabeth - (VOL. 3, P. 464 RUSSELL CO. 1787-1914 index Of Deeds). Dance Brown of Montgomery County…. on the south side of Copper Ridge, land conveyed from Shadrick Monk and Mary to Jesse Belsher dated August, 1799….. Beginning on the south side of a spur of Copper Ridge…. 40 acres…. Signed: Jesse B. Belsher and Elizabeth Belcher. No witnesses.
Original owner was Shadrick Monk who bought it in Nov. 1799. Russell Co., Va Law Order Book 3 (1799-1808) part 1 - P288 Jesse Belcher died in Ohio after 1850

1804-Son John Brown born in Va. probably in Russell Co. Va.

1805-Feb 2, indenture made between Jesse West of Russell Co., Va. and James Gray of Russell Co., Va. for $250 for thirty acres lying in Russell Co. in the Glade Hollow, a branch of Cedar Creek, the waters of Clinch River which was granted to Richard Henderson by the Commonwealth by patent bearing date of 30th day of March, 1788 ......witnessed by Charles Keesee, Dance Bowen (Brown), Anthony McKnight. At the July court, 1805.
Book 3 Russell Co., Va Law Order Book 3 (1799-1808) Page 420 - Indenture from Jesse West to James Gray, oaths of Dance Brown & Anthony McKnight, continued for further proof

1805-Mar 10, daughter Anna born in Russell County, Va.

1805-Mar 22, Thomas & Rebecca Fuller of Russell Co., Va. sold to George Counts of the same county a tract of land in Russell Co. on the south side of Copper Ridge, it being conveyed from William Monk and his wife to said Fuller...... witnessed by Anthony McKnight, James Gray, Dance Brown. In August court, 1805. Thus Dance was probably still in Russell Co. in August of 1805.

1805-July court in Russell Co. law order book 3 (1799-1808) page 420, records the indenture of sale of land from Jesse West to James Gray - was proven in court by the oaths of Dance Brown and Anthony McKnight, two of the witnesses thereto and cont. for further proof.

1805-August court in Russell Co. law order book 3 (1799-1808) page 426, records the indenture of sale of land from Thomas Fuller and Rebecca his wife to George Counts was produced in court and proven by the oaths of Anthony McKnight, James Gray, and Dance Brown witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded.

* Bedford County, Virginia (mid 1770s - 1799)
* Montgomery County, Virginia (1799 - 1804)
* Russell County, Virginia (1804 - 1807/8)
* Sumner County, Tennessee (1807 - 1897)
