New Hampshire Governor. Born in Watertown, New York, he was the fiftieth governor of New Hampshire from 1887 to 1889. Prior to being governor, he served on the city council and board of alderman for Dover, New Hampshire. He was then elected to the New Hampshire house of representatives from 1869 to 1870 and again from 1876 to 1877. In 1886, he was a delegate to the national convention of the Republican Party after which he ran for the governorship narrowly defeating his opponent. After serving one term as governor, he returned as president of the family business, Sawyer Woolen Mills. A prominent freemason, he served as director of a bank and several railroads until his death in Dover.
