Byzantine Emperor. He was born in approximately AD 515 and was adopted by the future Emperor Tiberius II. He served as the Emperor Justin II's commander-in-chief from 579 AD and defeated the Persians in AD 581 before coming to the throne after the death of Tiberius II in AD 582. He finally bought the war against Persia to a successful conclusion when he helped the exiled Prince Khosrau II to regain his throne and was given north eastern Mesopotamia and part of Armenia as a reward. He then turned his attention to the Balkans, which was being occupied by the Slavs and Avars. His armies drove out the invaders in AD 601 and he secured the area by encouraging Arnenian settlers to occupy the disputed region. He put the vulnerable Byzantine territories in Italy and Africa under the command of military governors known as Exarchs and by doing so slowed the Lombard advance into Italy. Although largely successful in strengthening the Empire's borders, he began to lose popularity towards the end of his reign, due partly to his policy of cutting soldiers wages and his refusal to pay a ransom for twelve thousand Byzantine soldiers held by the Avars. In AD 602 his armies north of the Danube mutinied and proclaimed Phocas as their leader. Riots broke out in Constantinople and he fled to Nicomedia while Phocas entered the city and was crowned Emperor. In November AD 602 Maurice was captured by the army and murdered, an act which provoked a new wave attacks by the Persians.
