William was born, not in 1884 as his gravestone and death certificate incorrectly state, but in 1879, most likely in or near the town of Walker, in Platte County, Nebraska. In June 1880 he appeared on the census of Platte County as a child of 1 year, and his WW1 draft registration card listed his birthdate as April 9, 1879. By then his family had since moved to Southern California, where he worked as a day laborer, farmer, and businessman. He married a German immigrant named Agnes Pauline Geisler on Sept. 3, 1914 in Los Angeles. They had no children of their own but kindly offered to adopt their nephew Robert after William's brother Martin died young of cancer.
