Professional Football Player, Coach. For eleven seasons (1959 to 1969), he played at the offensive tackle, defensive tackle and defensive end positions in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns. He was a member of the 1964 NFL Champion Brown's team. Born Monte Dale Clark, he attended Kingsburg High School (California) and played collegiate football at USC before being selected by the 49ers during the 4th round of the 1959 NFL Draft. He appeared in a career 139 regular season games. Following his playing career, Clark joined the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1975 as an offensive lines coach where he was on Don Shula's staff when they won two consecutive Super Bowls (VII in 1973 and VIII in 1974). He served as head coach of the 49ers in 1976 and the Lions from 1978 until 1984. He guided Detroit to two consecutive playoff appearances (1982 and 1983). He posted a regular season coaching record of 51 wins and 67 losses with 1 tie. Following his tenure as coach, he remained with the Lions as a team consultant. He died from complications of lung and liver disease.
