Major League Baseball Player. He played for five teams in ten years in the major leagues. For most of his career, he played third base, but he also pitched for six years, and played some at shortstop, second base, and outfield. He played for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (1898), Brooklyn Superbas (1899 to 1900), Detroit Tigers (1901 to 1903), New York Highlanders (1905 to 1906), and St. Louis Browns (1907 to 1908). During his first six years in the majors, he was a right-handed pitcher in 94 games, starting in 80 games. He won 33 and lost 49, logging a respectable earned run average of 3.74. In 1901 his 2.61 earned run average was third best in the American League behind Cy Young. He batted a modest .252 with four home runs and 201 runs batted in. His is credited by some with originating the squeeze play.
