During his first six years in the majors, he was a right-handed pitcher in 94 games, starting in 80 games. He won 33 and lost 49, logging a respectable earned run average of 3.74. In 1901 his 2.61 earned run average was third best in the American League behind Cy Young. He batted a modest .252 with four home runs and 201 runs batted in. His is credited by some with originating the squeeze play.
