Byzantine Emperor. Originally named Aspimarus, he was a Germanic officer in the Byzantine navy. He took part in the Emperor Leontios' failed attempt to recapture Carthage and, during the retreat; the fleet rebelled and placed him in command. He then led them to Constantinople and, with the support of the army and Imperial Guard; he entered the city and was proclaimed Emperor in 698 AD, He took the name Tiberios III and had Leontios' nose cut off and his tongue slit before imprisoning him in a monastery. Once in power he abandoned Carthage in favour of campaigning against the Umayyad Caliphate and won victories in Syria in 701 AD. In 704 AD Justinian II, who had been deposed by Leontios and survived an assassination attempt ordered by Tiberios, returned to Constantinople, reclaiming his throne in 705 AD. The two usurpers Tiberios and Leontius were executed together in the Hippodrome.
