Civil War Union Army Officer. A wealthy farmer, when the Civil War began he offered his services to the Union, and was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry on September 17, 1861. He led his men through the 1862 Peninsular Campaign, and in the September 1862 Antietam Campaign. During the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam he assumed command of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, II Army Corps when Brigadier General Max Weber was wounded in action. He led the brigade until the December 13, 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, when he was severely wounded leading it in one of the futile assaults on the Confederate positions at Marye's Heights. His wounds would prevent him from further fields service, and he resigned due to disability on February 7, 1863. He returned to Delaware to resume his farming, and passed away in Wilmington in 1881. His daughter married Civil War Union Major General James Harrison Wilson.
