4th Premier of Nova Scotia. A member of the Conservative Party, he served in this position from October 1878 until May 1882. Born of Scottish ancestry in Springville, Nova Scotia, Canada, his father was a local politician who served in the Canadian Senate in Ottawa, Canada after it was formed in 1867. He attended the Pictou Academy in Nova Scotia and studied law under James McDonald. In 1858 he founded the conservative newspaper Colonial Standard and remained its editor until 1878. In 1867 he ran for the Nova Scotia House of Assembly and lost, but won election four years later. In 1878 the Conservative Party won the provincial election and he became Premier of Nova Scotia, replacing Philip Carteret Hill. In May 1882 he resigned his position following a palace revolt and he was replaced by John Sparrow David Thompson. He then accepted a position as the crown clerk for Nova Scotia's Halifax County. He died in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada at the age of 88.
