Virginia D. Shepherd Dies
Marine Ex-Commandant's Wife
Virginia Driver Shepherd, 91, the wife of General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., former Marine Corps commandant, died of hepatitis November 29 at her home in La Jolla, California. Mrs. Shepherd was born in Norfolk. She attended National Cathedral School in Washington. During her husband's military career, she accompanied him to China, Haiti and several Marine bases in the United States. He was commandant of the Marine Corps from 1952 through 1955. After his retirement in 1956, they lived in Warrenton until moving to La Jolla in 1968. Mrs. Shepherd was a member of the Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. In addition to her husband of 67 years of La Jolla Mrs. Shepherd is survived by three children, retired Marine Colonel Lemuel C. Shepherd III of La Jolla, Wilson E.D. Shepherd of Coronado, California and Virginia Shepherd Ord of Nantucket, Massachusetts, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
