Clarence Elmer Gifford, or Pop as he was known, was born on June 7, 1888 to William Sylvestor Gifford and Helen Carroll Gifford in Manchester, Adams County, Ohio. Clarence had two brothers: Foster Carroll and Clifford Evert. From his father's first marriage to Margaret Carroll, he had five brothers and two sisters: Earl Harlan, Clyde, Chester, William Scott, Gladys, Maxine, and Willard Raymond. He married the love of his life, Jennie Lynn Carroll in Huntington on Christmas Day 1906. They had three children: Wandergold Amanda, Rubie Mae, and Clarence Elmer Jr. In addition, they raised Jennie's two nieces, Thelma and Wilma Carroll. Clarence and Jennie lived on a farm on Roby Hollow Road in Wayne County. Clarence sold the farm when Jennie Lynn died in 1953. He never remarried. He died on January 9, 1974 at the age of 75.
