Egyptian Pharaoh. He ruled during Egypt's Nineteenth Dynasty, coming to the throne in 1203 BC. His reign is known as a time of unrest, with plots against him by his enemies. The most serious of these was Amenmesse, possibly his half-brother, who for two years established himself as a rival Pharaoh and held control over Thebes and Nubia. While occupying Thebes Amenmesse ordered Seti's unfinished tomb in the Valley of the Kings vandalised and his inscriptions erased, but was later defeated by Seti who in turn destroyed the usurper's inscriptions and monuments. Now in full control again, he made Chancellor Bay his most important official and gave him the rare honour of a tomb in the Valley of the Kings. He increased copper mining at Timna in Edom and constructed a temple there before dying in 1197 BC after a reign of five years. His mummy was among those found in the cache at Deir el Bahri and is now kept in Cairo Museum.
