Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. The son of controversial Tennessee radical Congressman and Governor William "Parson" Gannaway Brownlow, he served in the Union Army first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Tennessee (Union) Volunteer Cavalry, then as as an Assistant Inspector General on the staff of Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis, then as Colonel and commander of the 1st Tennessee (Union) Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
