Maria Adelheid was the daughter of Prince Ranieri, Archduke of Austria and his wife Princess Maria-Francesca of Sardinia.
On 12 April 1842, she became the first wife of King Vittorio Emmanuel II of Italy. They were the parents of 8 children-
King Umberto I, King Amadeo I of Spain, Oddone Eugenio, Maria-Pia, Carlo Alberto, Vittorio Emmanuel (died as a child), and Vittorio Emmanuel (died as a child).
