Cornelia was a daughter of John Jordan Crittenden and his first wife, Sarah O. Lee. Her father was five times United States Senator, Governor of Kentucky, member of Congress and twice Attorney General of the United States. Her mother was a daughter of Major John Lee, one of the Incorporators and trustees of Transylvania University.

An interesting fact - at the age of 6, by November, 1822 Cornelia had memorized 2,177 Bible verses, a feat only topped by her older sister Mary Ann, who had memorized 2, 851.

Cornelia married Rev. John Clarke Young in Frankfort in November 1839. She was his second wife. They had six children: John Clarke, William Clarke, George Clarke, Eugenia, Zillah, and Sallie Lee Young.

All of their children were well educated. The three sons attended Centre College - John, Class of 1857, William 1859, and George 1868. Eugenia & Zillah were in the Caldwell College Class of 1862. Sarah Lee was listed as a student at Caldwell College in the 1862-63 catalog and received the degree Doctor of Literature in 1919.
