Professional Basketball Player. For four seasons (1956 to 1960), he played at the guard position in the National Basketball Association with the New York Knicks and Minneapolis Lakers. Born Ronald Charles Sobieszczyk, he attended Saint Bonaventure Academy in Sturtevant, Wisconsin and played collegiate basketball at DePaul University in Chicago. While with the Blue Demons, Sobie captained Ray Meyer's team that appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 1956. He concluded his college career as one of the school's all-time leaders in points scored. He was chosen by the Fort Wayne Pistons during the 1st round of the 1956 NBA Draft, however he was traded to the Knicks. Sobie's most successful season was 1957-1958 while with New York, when he scored 630 points with a 11.5 points per game average in 55 games. In addition, he was among the league's leaders (tenth place) with a .820 free throw percentage. In 192 career regular season games, he scored 1,619 points with a 8.4 lifetime points per game average and recorded 353 assists. Following his basketball career, he owned a sports bar. He was a member of the first class of inductees into the DePaul University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976. He was inducted into the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
