Professional Basketball Player. He played collegiate basketball at Hamline University (Minnesota) where his father Joseph Warren Hutton, Sr. served as their longtime coach. While with the Pipers, he was a member of their 1949 NAIA National Championship Team and achieved All-American status that year. For two seasons (1950 to 1952), he played at the guard position in the National Basketball Association with the Minneapolis Lakers. He was a member of their 1951-1952 NBA Champion squad, appearing in 12 games during that postseason, scoring 33 total points with 12 assists. In 120 career regular season NBA games, Hutton scored 302 points with 115 assists. He served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1953. Following his playing career, Hutton worked as a teacher and basketball coach at the high school level in the Minneapolis-area for thirty years. He was inducted into the Hamline University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.
