Ross moved to New Jersey after the death of his father, Dr. John Blackstone Pouncey, in 1894. He was an accountant and office manager for The Texas Co. (later called Texaco) in 17 Battery Place, New York City. Passport applications show that he traveled extensively for the company. He lived in Brazil briefly in 1917. In 1920, he intended to conduct commercial business in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Italy.
Obituary, the Birmingham News, 31 July 1954:
"J. Ross Pouncey Sr., a former Birmingham resident, died July 3 at his home at Woodcliff Lake, N. J., after a lingering illness, according to word received here. Private funeral services were held in Ridgewood, N. J. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery here.
"Mr. Pouncey's wife was the late Cora Fridelle Pouncey. They are survived by a daughter, Miss Rosalind Pouncey, three sons, Banks W. Pouncey, Woodcliff Lake; Burlye B. Pouncey Jr., Hackensack, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Albert E. Sproul Jr., of Bergenfield, and Burlye B. Pouncey, Jr., of Englewood."
