Byzantine Emperor. He is known to history as "The Khazar". He was crowned as co-emperor by his father, Constantine V, when he was only one year old, and became ruler in his own right following his father's death in AD 775. A year later, he had his five year old son, Constantine VI, crowned co-emperor. He continued his father's policy of suppressing the veneration of icons and, because of this, ceased relations with his wife, Irene, when he found icons in her possession. He survived conspiracies against his rule by his younger brothers, whom he had blinded and exiled, and fought successfully against the Arabs in Asia Minor. He died of a fever while on a campaign in Bulgaria and was succeeded as ruler by his widow, Irene.
