On the 1860 Ward 5, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois Census, dated July 3rd, in dwelling #810, on page 106, (Heritage Quest), I found Liquor Dealers John Stephani, 34 and (brother) Jacob Stephani, 30; Emma Stephani, 4; Bertha Stephani, 2 and Mary Preble, 18. John has $1,000 in real estate and $10,000 in personal property and Jacob has $3,000. in real estate and $10,000 in personal property. The children were born in "Chicago" and the rest were born in Prussia. It would appear the children's mother has passed away. On the same 1860 census, John Stephani's in laws claimed they had 2 young Stephani children: Emma, 2 and Fanny, 1. I can only assume the in-laws shared them or watched them during the time their father was at work.
On the 1900 Ward 12, Chicago, IL census, I found watch maker Chas H Beiling (sic), 48; born Jan 1842 in Germany, he immigrated in 1868 and naturized. Plus his wife of 23 years Bertha E Beiling (sic), 43, Oct 1857, IL, had no children. Both of their dads and his mom were born in Germany, plus her mom was born "at sea."
The IL State Archives list her as Bertha E Bieling, died 8 Jun 1902 in Chicago, aged 43 years (born about 1859), on certificate #1957.
Her IL Death Record states Bertha E Bieling died 8 Jun 1902 in Chicago at 320 N Robey St., aged 43, born in Chicago, a married housewife. James C Gavin Funeral Home handled the arrangements, she was buried at Forest Home on 10 Jun 1902. A H Stephan (sic) was the informant (FS). That's Alfred Henry Stephani, her half brother.
She does not have a gravestone but is buried along side the graves in the photo, of her step brother, Dr. Alfred and his wife Mary E. P. Stephani.
