Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1946 to 1951), he played at the third base position with the St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox. Born Robert Bernard Dillinger, he attended Glendale High School (California) and played collegiate football and baseball at the University of Idaho. He eventually focused on baseball to pursue as a profession. He played for a few years in the Brown's organization before his service in the United States Army Air Force during World War II interrupted his career. Dillinger made his big league debut with the Browns on April 16, 1946. His speed on the base paths and his exceptional hitting made up for his sub-par fielding skills. He was a three-time American League leader in stolen bases (1947 with 34, 1948 with 28 and 1949 with 20) and led the league with 207 hits in 1948. He was selected to the American League All Star Team in 1949. In 753 regular season games, he had 888 hits and a lifetime .306 batting average. Dillinger extended his career an additional four years in the Pacific Coast League before retiring. Following his baseball career, he worked in construction.
