Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Army in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as a Private in Company B, 8th US Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for action between August 13, and October 31, 1868 in the vicinity of the Black Mountains, Arizona. His citation reads "Bravery in scouts and actions against Indians".


Assistant Surgeon George W. Miller, of Philadelphia, was commissioned and mustered with the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on Oct. 14, 1861, for 3 yrs. He was appointed to the charge of a ward in the U. S. General Hospital at Hilton Head, S. C , from Oct. 1862, to Oct. 1, 1863 and was honorably discharged at Hilton Head, S. C, on April 25, 1864 to accept a promotion as surgeon in the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry but was not mustered as the regiment was below the minimum number. He was then commissioned as surgeon of the 52nd P. V.,on June 7, 1864 but declined and then accepted an appointment as assistant surgeon at Summit House Hospital, Philadelphia, from June 14, 1864, to March 16, 1865; He was then detached and placed in charge of the provost marshal's office, Washington, D. C, until March 25, 1865 when he was commissioned 1st assistant surgeon , 4th regiment, Hancock's 1st Corps. He then was detached and placed in charge of the hospital at Camp Stoneman until June 27, 1865. He subsequently enlisted as a private in Co. K, 8th U. S. Cavalry, serving in the Arizona Territory and was appointed hospital steward at Camp Whipple. He was discharged Sept. 7, 1869 and died at Wickenberg, Arizona Territory on Sept. 27, 1869.
