Director, Filmmaker. A native of Maniwaki, Quebec, Carle studied in Montreal before going to work as a graphic artist for Radio-Canada in 1955. In 1960, he joined the National Film Board where in 1965 he made his first feature film, entitled "La Vie heureuse de Léopold Z." Leaving the National Film Board soon afterwards, he began building a reputation for himself as a filmmaker and in 1972, became internationally known following the release of his film "La Vraie nature de Bernadette." Among his many films and documentaries that he is remembered for are works such as: "La Mort d'un bûcheron" (1973), "Les Plouffe" (1981), "Maria Chapdelaine" (1983), "ONF 50 ans" (1989), and "Pudding chômeur" (1996). In 1999, he filmed his own autobiography entitled "Moi, j'me fais mon cinéma." During his long career, he received numerous awards and honors including the Prix Albert-Tessier in 1990 and the Governor General's Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 1997. In 1998, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and was appointed a Grand Officier of l'Ordre Nationale du Quebec in 2007. Following his death from Parkinson's disease at the age 81, he was given a state funeral by the Province of Quebec.
