Tradition indicated that the Mathias family descended from the royal Hapsburg line of Hungary and lived in Alsace-Lorraine. When Germany took over The Palatine, the Mathias family was stripped of land holdings and privileges and required to serve in the military. To escape such a tyranny, three Mathias brothers (Johanne, Gottfriedt and Philip) emigrated to Philadelphia and settled in Berks and Bucks Counties PA.. Johanne (John Sr) Then Frederick Co MD, then across the Potomac River and down into the Shenandoah Valley where he is shown in the 1790 census of Shenandoah Co. In 1791 John Mathias Sr, acquired property in the Lost River area of Hardy Co, VA, just over the North Mountains that separate the county from Shanandoah and Rockingham Counties, and 20 miles NW of Fulks Run.
