Professional Football Player. Born John Jynus Zilly, he attended Lewis High School in Southington, Connecticut and Cheshire Academy (Connecticut), before playing collegiate football at the University of Notre Dame. While with the Fighting Irish, he played at the right-end position and was a member of the 1943 National Championship team before his service in the United States Navy interrupted his collegiate career. Upon his return home, he resumed playing football at Notre Dame and was a member of the 1946 National Champion squad. Selected by the Cleveland Rams during the 4th round of the 1945 NFL Draft, Zilly would not join the team until after the franchise relocated to Los Angeles prior to the 1946 season. For six seasons (1947 to 1952), he played at the defensive and offensive end positions in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles. He appeared in 64 regular season games, and was a member of the 1951 NFL Champion Rams' team. He enjoyed his most successful offensive season in 1948 while with the Rams, when he recorded 13 receptions for 169 yards and 4 touchdowns. Following his playing career, Zilly served as an assistant coach with Montana State and later Notre Dame.
