Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Germany, he was issued the award on February 14, 1879 for his actions as a private with Company G, 8th US Cavalry, US Army, on October 20, 1869, during a campaign at the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona, during the Apache Wars. He emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri and joined the US Army in May 1868 and was sent to the Arizona Territory in the Western Frontier. He was among the sixty-one cavalry troopers from the 1st and 8th Cavalry Regiment who, on October 5, 1869, pursued an Apache raiding party led by Cochise, and finally caught up to them on October 20. In what was one of the major battles of the Apache campaign. He was among the thirty-two soldiers who were officially awarded the Medal of Honor on that day. He was discharged from the US Army in May 1873 but reenlisted in August 1874. He died around the age of 37. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in action."
