Minos Miller's father was Willis Miller (b. ?-d. bef. 1850), whose exact dates of birth and death and place of burial are unknown. His mother, born Martha Varner, remarried to William Hornaday in 1852 and had two more children, one of whom was William Temple Hornaday, famous naturalist who is credited with saving the buffalo from extinction, and founder of the Bronx Zoo.

During the Civil War, Minos Miller was a second lieutenant in the 54th United States Colored Infantry. A number of his letters to family members during the War survive in various archives, and are excellent source material for Civil War historians.

Miller died of "consumption" at the age of 55.
