The Rev. Boyd was born June 21, 1923, in Pittsburgh, a son of Alexander and Sarah E. Goff Boyd.
He was an alumnus of Taylor Alderdice High School in Pittsburgh. He then graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and later earned a master's of divinity degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary.
He served in the 436th Troop Carrier Group in the Army Air Corps as a chaplain's assistant during World War II.
As a minister for 50 years in the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Rev. Boyd served seven churches. He retired in 1990.
Following his retirement, the Rev. Boyd served as interim pastor of First Christian Church in New Castle and Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church.
An active member of the Free and Accepted Masons, the Rev. Boyd joined the fraternal organization in 1978, serving in 1997 as a worshipful master of Lodge 810 in Hermitage. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory and served as commander of the New Castle Legion of Honor in 1975.
On Aug. 27, 1996, in Boston, he was elected to the highest honor in the Scottish Rite as a 33rd degree Mason. He also served as Past Sovereign Prince of the Princes of Jerusalem. He was a member of Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh and the Lawrence Caravan.
The Rev. Boyd was married on Nov. 18, 1950, to the former Dorothy A. Plaskett in Grace Methodist Church, Dayton, Ohio. She survives at home.
Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy A. and Jeffrey Wilson of Hermitage; two sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Jo Ellen Boyd of Yorktown, Va., and Charles W. and Deborah Wright Boyd of Frederick, Md.; and eight grandchildren.
The Rev. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen B. Boyd.
