Roy Chamberlain "Polly" Wolfe was born Saturday, September 1, 1888. As a youth, he starred in baseball and football and was given the nickname "Polly", by which he was known for the rest of his life. A professional baseball player, he played minor league ball between 1910 and 1921. He played for the Pittsfield (MA) Electrics during the 1913 and 1914 seasons. In 1916, he played for the Rock Island Islanders, along with teammate Jim Duggan, who was portrayed by actor Tom Hanks in the film, "A League of Their Own". Wolfe was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox. He played outfield, throwing right and batting left. His first game in the majors was September 22, 1912. His final major league baseball game was August 31, 1914. Wolfe's batting average was .297 in the minor leagues and .207 while playing for the White Sox. He died at age fifty in Morris, Illinois.

Polly Wolfe, one of twelve children, was the son of Daniel and Rachel A. Wolfe. Wolfe married Phoebe Wood on October 1, 1917. She was the daughter of Stephen and Maria Wood, with whom the couple made their home in Illinois. The Wolfes had two daughters, Geraldine and Anna Lucille.
