Obituary
The following obituary notice of the late Col, H. M. Bossert is from the Renovo News: Mr. Bossert was a prominent person in this section of the country for the past eight to ten years, following at times the calling of school teachers and salesman. His school labors were in Leidy and Noyes Townships and Sinnemahoning. He was also a leader in the movement which led to the building of the Lumberman's Bethal Church at this place; in fact, he superintended the building operations and collected large amounts for this object. He was for a long time Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was also deputy postmaster at this place for about one year. While acting as sales agent for different book firms he came in contact with a large number of lumbermen with whom he became a general favorite, many seeking his advice and counsel in their private affairs. The Colonel was one of those kind who when once taking a position maintained it, always determined to push any matter he was connected with through to a successful termination. His greatest delight was to speak of the success attained in the erection of the church here. While he had some enemies, he also had many warm friends and those among the best element in this section. At the time of his death he was a member of John S. Bittner Post G.A.R of Lock Haven. He was formerly connected with the Odd Fellows at the same place and we also believe, was formerly a member of the P.O. S. of A. During the war he was Captain of Company C in the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteers for three months; later he was Colonel of the 139th Pennsylvania Volunteers for nine months. He participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Antietam and a number of others. He was a student at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, but did not complete the course. At the time of his death he was 67 years and 8 days old. He was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. His first wife was Mary C. Brown, of Bald Eagle Township, this county. By this union he had seven children. Two, (one son and one daughter) survives him. The former, John S. Bossert, resides at Mill Hall, and the daughter, Mrs. J. R. DeHaas, resides at Westport. His second marriage to Miss S. J. Murry occurred two years ago last May. There are many regrets at his departure, and many sympathizing friends will attend his funeral which takes place Monday at 1:30 p. m. at Westport.
Deep sympathy is felt for Mrs. Bossert, who was a devoted and patient wife and did all that could be done to make his life pleasant and his burdens easy. May he rest in peace.

He attended school at McEwensville, and was also a student for a time in Lafayette College, but owing to lack of funds did not complete the course. For a number of years he successfully engaged in teaching. He was captain of a military company at Mill Hall, and on President Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers he enlisted in the 11th P. V. I., later reenlisting, this time in the 137th P. V. I. He was a recruiting officer for the last regiment at Lock Haven, and was commissioned colonel, and as such served until elected register and recorder of Clinton County, when he resigned. He took an active and prominent part in political affairs, and was a recognized leader in the ranks of the Republican Party in this section of the State. In religious belief he was a Presbyterian; socially he was identified with the I. O. O. F. and the Grange. He was an honored and valued citizen in his adopted county, one who enjoyed the high regard of all who knew him. In Bald Eagle Valley, H. M. Bossert wedded Miss Mary C, daughter of George Brown, and for a number of years they lived in that township, but later removed to Westport, Clinton County, where Mr. Bossert engaged in teaching. His wife died in 1876, and was buried in Beech Creek cemetery; he passed from earth in 1892, at the age of sixty-seven years, and his remains were interred in the Noyes cemetery at West Port. In their family were seven children, namely: George, who died in childhood; Elizabeth E, who died when about twenty-four years of age; John S., the subject proper of this sketch; Anna C., who married Dr. A. W. Heilman, and died in Flemington, Penn.; William and Caroline, who both died in childhood; and Mary F., wife of Joseph R. DeHass, of West Port.
