Educated at Halifax Academy, Dalhousie University (B.A.); Harvard Law School; Oxford University (M.A.), Gilbert Stairs was the first Rhodes Scholar from Nova Scotia. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1909 and to the Bar of Quebec in 1912 and created K.C. in 1920.

Gilbert Stairs joined the Canadian Army, 66th Princess Louise Fusiliers, at Halifax in 1907 and the Canadian Grenadier Guards in 1912 as Captain and Adjutant. Made second in command of the 245 Battalion C.E.F. in 1916 then sent to France in October 1917 as Captain of the 87th Battalion. Awarded the Military Cross in September of 1918.
