FUSSELL, FRED MORRIS—Fred Morris Fussell was born on October 7, 1895, at Sheridan, Mo., to Mr. and Mrs. Morris Fremont Fussell. He departed this life, October 24, 1966, at St. Joseph's hospital in Syracuse, N. Y. He was 71 years of age.
Fred grew up in the Geneva area and attended Geneva public schools. He farmed in western Nebraska and after losing a wheat crop to the drouth, he made baseball his career. During high school he pitched for teams around Fillmore county and in 1921 he pitched for and managed a semi-pro team at Exeter. The catcher, Charley Tollifson, was a co-manager.
In 1922 he signed with the Chicago Cubs and during the following years, he played for the Cubs, also Wichita Falls, Seattle, Wash., Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, New York and Dallas, Tex. He retired in 1939 from professional baseball.
In 1936 he was awarded a trophy for Meritorious Service to the City of Syracuse, N. Y., by Mayor Roland B. Marvin of Syracuse. He worked for the Presto-Lite Corporation in Syracuse for 25 years and retired in 1963.
In 1918 he entered the United States Army and served in Company C of 355 Infantry division. He was wounded in the Battle of the Argonne and was honorably discharged in 1919.
He was the youngest of six children, all of whom had preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mary, of Syracuse, three nieces and two nephews and a large group of other relatives and friends.
Services were conducted at Welter funeral home in Syracuse by Rev. John Annas, pastor of First Methodist church in Syracuse. Graveside services were held at the Geneva cemetery, Saturday, October 29, with Rev. K. Orlando Lee, pastor of First Methodist church, Geneva, officiating.
