William Showalter was a proof-reader for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Both he and his wife died from tuberculous, one year apart. She was 27 years old; he was 33. Maria's daughter Edna was raised in Mexico by her mother's family, and Maria & William's son William Jr. was raised in the Chicago area by his father's mother.
