He was born in East Hartford, Connecticut and enlisted at East Hartford as a private in Company G, Connecticut 16th Infantry, in 1862. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was taken Prisoner of War by Confederate Forces at Plymounth, North Carolina, on December 10, 1864. He was paroled back to Union Forces on January 10, 1865. He was mustered out of military service on June 1, 1865.
