When Donald arrived in Vietnam 15 July 1966, he was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, USARV. The battalion was participating in Operation Attleboro, When B Company was engaged by hostile forces 6 kilometers northwest of Dau Tieng Base. Donald died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile explosive device.
