She was born March 27, 1907, at Gorin, MO, the daughter of Benjamin and Rilda (Huntley) Miller.
She was married to Oscar E. Schelen on December 22, 1931, at Burlington, IA. He passed away in 1968.
Jewel did restaurant work and then in later years did domestic work.
She was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of Kings Daughters, Retired Railroad Association, loved to play bingo and working within her church. She attended school in Missouri.
She is survived by a son, O. William Schelen, Quincy, IL; one grandchild; two sisters, Alta Corso and Eula Ridge, both of Burlington, IA; two brothers, Archie Miller of Memphis, MO, and Fred Miller of Fredericksburg, TX; nieces and nephews.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister; four brothers and one grandson.
Funeral services were held at Lunning Chapel on October 9, 2001, with Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis officiating. Interment was in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, IA. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and The American Cancer Society. Lunning Chapel of Burlington, IA was in charge of arrangements.
